Nursing is a profession guided by ethics and code of conduct. Nursing is both an art and science.
At LIMH, the Nursing Department incorporates both the art and science nature of nursing, the art aspect is the highly valued qualities of care, compassion and communication while the science is the use of theories and evidenced-based practical concepts for improving the care we administer to our patients and clients.
We incorporates the 5-C’s of Caring; Compassion, Competence, Confidence, Conscience and Commitment in educating our patients and their family members about health condition, administer medications and treatment, delivering future leaders alive, assist in reproductive health, give emotional support and advice to our patients and their family members and more.
We also work with healthy people and communities around us by providing preventive healthcare and wellness.

Function of Nursing Department in LIMH
We are directly involved in almost all aspects of LIMH hospital quality service, because we are the bedrock of the hospital.
- We are directly responsible for assessing, monitoring and care to patient and performing immediate interventions to reduce risk and prevent medical complications.

- We assist in surgeries and other major operations example, gynaecological and obstetric surgery
- We give health education to our patients both outpatients and inpatients for them to make informed decisions

- We offer family planning services and child welfare care through immunization, educating mothers on exclusive breastfeeding and adjusting to complementary feed.
Antenatal Clinic: We practice focused antenatal care, we are time conscious, we have what we call fast track, where the pregnant woman come to see her doctor without wasting time. We give health education about pregnancy, diet, signs of labour and red alert which are possible signs of complication. Our antenatal clinic is opened from Monday to Friday and booking of new patients are done every Thursday. We operate in a friendly and therapeutic environment all at affordable charges.
Antenatal Ward: We operate 24hours service in the antenatal ward, we have experienced midwives to care for mothers admitted into the ward through the antenatal clinic either for induction of labour or planned for elective caesarean section for preoperative management or any other condition related to pregnancy for close monitoring and observation.
Postnatal Ward: This is where women and their babies are provided with medical care immediately after delivery. It is divided into two sections (Spontaneous Vagina delivery A3 and Caesarean Section C3) and both run a 24 hours service in a clean and conducive environment.
We give close observation on the neonates and mothers for 24 hours to 48 hours before discharge, this to check for jaundice and other abnormalities and refer to the paediatrician for treatment and we also orients our client on the lookout for jaundice or anything abnormal within them or their neonate after discharge. We make sure all mothers lactate and learn to breastfeed their baby before discharge and we also orientate HIV mothers on choice of feeding for neonates.
We health educate on importance of breastfeeding, personal hygiene, techniques in breastfeeding and also educate CS mother on the importance of early ambulation.
Postnatal Clinic: This is the outpatient clinic for nursing mothers at 6 weeks for normal delivery and 2 weeks for C/S for check up. We assess the health status of mother and child, counsel mothers on family planning methods and give counseling to mothers on breastfeeding, nutrition, hygiene, rest and infant care.
Labour Ward: The labour room operates 24/7, WE ARE CALLED THE BABIES FACTORY IN AFRICA, with highly competent and experience midwives, we have maximum of 24 neonates per day and minimum of 8 per day, we operate in a therapeutic environment with affordable price to deliver future leaders alive. Our labour ward is divided into two parts
New Ultramodern Birthing Suite: Is a delivery suite where the support person either husband or relative is allow to witness the labour. It is highly equipped with all delivery gadgets at an affordable price.
Regular Delivery Suite: A delivery suite that accommodates more than one client in labour in a therapeutic environment with delivery gadget, qualified staff personnel at affordable price with quick action in birthing process, episiotomy, vacuum delivery, induction and caesarean section if need be to prevent complications.
Neonatal Ward: Our neonatal ward in LIMH is affiliated with Massey Children Hospital; the unit operates 24 hours service with highly skilled personnel. We focus on the care of newborns and infants, specially those who require special medical attention. We have Intensive Care Unit for neonates especially for all premature in which they thrive well.
LIMPEM Ward: This is the ward where all obstetrics and gynaecological surgeries are kept for close observation within the first 24 hours after surgery, to stabilize and monitor their recovery before they are transfer to their various wards.
LIMMCU Ward (Intensive Care Unit): We use specialized skill and extensive knowledge of disease pathology to provide emergency interventions that sustain life.
We work quickly, efficiently, independently and meticulously to deal with critical cases with state-of-the-art equipment to care for our patients in the hospital and referral hospitals. Our services are on 24hours basis.
Emergency Ward: Our emergency department operates 24hours; we take referral from both government and non-government hospital. We only treat cases pertaining to Obstetrics and gynaecological emergency cases. We are very quick to recognize acute problems and able to resolve or stabilize them immediately upon arrival, attending to solve their issues using triage.
Gynaecological Ward: This is the ward where we care for women with gynaecological cases who need to stay for surgery in the hospital, manage postoperative gynecological patients and emergency gynaecological admission.
Gynaecological Department: This is an outpatient department that provides care to women and young teenagers in a sensitive environment that meet their need for privacy and dignity.
The Unit is divided into two clinic sections; Gynae Clinic runs from (Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm), and the Fertility Clinic.
Anaesthetics Department: We allow patients to tolerate any kind of operations and procedures in comfort and safety. We operate 24 hours in LIMH, we are efficient and dynamic in nature.
Theatre Unit: Our services is 24 hours, we have highly qualified skilled theatre nurses who work with competent gynae and obstetrics surgeons. We operate in a friendly and therapeutic environment, we ensure proper care and handling of surgical instrument to ensure safety of the patients, we maintain sterile field in accordance with competent standard. We prepare timely and accurate records of patient history and recovery chart.
Family Planning Clinic: We operate from Monday to Friday; we attend to all child bearing age, including teenagers and men. Our family planning is available and accessible through our skilled family planning practitioners. We provide counseling and provide the preferred choice of the clients after counseling.
Relationship of Nurses with Patients: We operate in a friendly and therapeutic environment with our client.
Relationship of Nurses with other Professionals: We have interred and cordial professional relationship by working together to achieve the vision and mission of the hospital as one umbrella to give quality care to the patient, increase job satisfaction. We maintain a healthy relationship, avoiding lateral aggression on each other.
Lagos Island Maternity Hospital is a hospital that specializes in caring for women while they are pregnant, effectively monitors the childbirth process, taking care of the newborns and the mothers giving birth and the postpartum period.
There is an Antenatal Clinic for all pregnant women where Antenatal classes and education take place, every weekday. Here also, Antenatal booking, examination by Midwives are done before the patients are seen by Doctors and Consultants.
The Hospital also runs a Gynae Clinic for all female patients with reproductive challenges.
The Gynae Clinic runs through Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm. Patients are given Health Talk and there are dedicated Medical Officers and Nurses who attend to all the Patients.
WELCOME TO PHARMACY
We oversee medication procurement, storage, dispensing and utilization throughout the hospital. Pharmacy staff play an important role in providing drug information to both health care professionals and patients.
The department is professionally equipped with both Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians who work together to ensure patients receive the highest quality pharmaceutical care possible.
Hours of Operation
in Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, the Pharmacy Department is opened and may be consulted about drugs-related issues 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Our Pharmacy department provides clinical pharmacy services to all patients in the wards by reviewing patients’ medicine prescriptions, monitoring drug therapy and ensuring prompt supply of medications. We assist and work together with other health care professionals in the hospital to ensure positive clinical outcomes of all drugs therapy.
We have the ARV unit where we cater for patients on ART by counseling and dispensing of needed medication. Also provision of ARV prophylaxis for PMTCT, exposed babies and post exposure prophylaxis.
Free health unit:
Where staff medication and health needs are attended to and also, free dispensing of routine drugs and counseling of pregnant women takes place.
